The Writing Center
What is the Writing Center?
It's an online service where USU students can get help during the writing process. It's also a room at both the Roosevelt and the Vernal USU buildings for walk-in conferences. The Writing Center is not an editing service, although peer responders can also help with mechanics and citation problems. All writing conferences are free and confidential.
What do people do in the Writing Center?
Discussing and revising assignments is a normal part of the writing process. Face-to-face writing conferences usually last about 30 minutes. Peer responders spend even longer on papers for the online service. Sometimes that means you will need to change words or phrases after a writing conference, and other times re-structure whole paragraphs or pages. You can determine the depth of our feedback based on the amount of revision you are prepared to do.
How can writers get the most out of a writing conference?
First, know what your assignment requires. Describe your assignment in detail for the online service, and bring a copy of the assignment sheet to your face-to-face writing conference.
When can I use the Writing Center?
- Online conferences: Go to "Online Writing Center" under Quick Links on the USU Uintah Basin website at http://www.uintahbasin.usu.edu. Fill out detailed information about your assignment, then submit the paper in a Microsoft Word document. This service takes up to 48 hours for an electronic response, but it is a convenient way to get a peer response if you can plan ahead.
- Walk-in conferences: The Writing Centers in Roosevelt and Vernal are generally open afternoons and/or evenings. Check the bulletin boards or call USU (435-722-1700) for up-to-date hours.
